Hi everyone,
I am ZeusAFK. I am a software developer, but also a long-time
Knight Online player. I played this game a lot when I was younger, and despite all the years that have passed, it has always remained special to me.
For the last few months, I have been working alone on something I have wanted to create for a long time: a
Knight Online version
server and
client, both built completely from scratch.
Today, I want to share the first public technical demo.
I want to be very clear about its current state: this is far from being a complete game. If I am being generous, I would say that around 20% of it works. Many systems are missing, incomplete or simply broken. This release is intended to show the current progress and give people a chance to see what I have been building.
The server is written in C# using .NET 10 and Entity Framework. The client is being developed with the Godot Engine.
I do not have plans to launch a private server. I am not trying to make money from this project or from any other Knight Online-related work. I am doing it because I enjoy programming and because rebuilding a game I loved when I was younger is genuinely fun for me.
The project will be released as open
source once it reaches a better state and I have had time to clean up the code. One of the main reasons for making it open source is that I know it would be almost impossible for me to finish a project of this size alone.
For this demo, account creation is automatic. The Game Master
panel is enabled for everyone with the Scroll Lock key, and increased movement speed can be enabled with the G key.
Please keep in mind that there is currently no real security implemented on the server. By manipulating packets, you could probably make the server do almost anything.
I know that somebody may want to try to hack it, but is it really worth hacking a server that openly tells you it is an unfinished and completely unprotected demo?
The same applies to decompiling the client or extracting its assets. You could probably do it, but the source code will be published anyway, so there is not much point.
A DDoS attack would also be very easy. The demo is hosted on a cheap VPS without DDoS protection, so taking it offline probably wouldn't be much of an achievement. I would rather see people use that time to explore the project, share ideas or eventually contribute to it.
You can download the first release here:
Reporting issues is completely optional. Testing is not especially valuable at this stage because I already know that almost everything is broken in one way or another. However, if you find something that really bothers you and you would like me to prioritize it, feel free to report the issue.
Why am I sharing it now instead of waiting until it is more complete? Honestly, a man needs motivation. I have been working on this alone for several months, and I would really like to hear what other Knight Online developers and players think about it.
I am also not sure how the cheap VPS will react if several people connect at the same time. I apologize in advance if the server becomes slow or laggy, but that is part of what technical demos are for.
Please try it and let me know what you think. I am genuinely excited to finally share my work with you guys.
