Hello everyone,
I'd like to share with you the modernization project I've been working on for the classic
Knight Online v1.298 open-
source (OpenKO)
client.
Our goal: to preserve 100% of the unforgettable nostalgic atmosphere and spirit of the 2004 game, while elevating the graphics engine, combat mechanics, and interface to a fluid and modern level by 2026 standards.
I would like to share the modernization project I've been developing on the open-source
Knight Online v1.298 (OpenKO) client.
The vision: Preserve 100% of the nostalgic 2004 atmosphere and identity while elevating graphics, combat clarity, and HUD convenience to modern standards.

WHAT WAS ADDED AND IMPROVED?
1. Visuals & Atmosphere
• True 1080p Widescreen & DPI Scaling: 1920x1080 native resolution, 96 DPI crystal-clear fonts, and character selection/loading screens that scale to full screen without distortion.
• Cinematic Post-Processing (Bloom & Color Grading): Subtle light blooms and warm cinematic color grading using the DirectX 9 render target architecture.
• Extended View Distance (View Distance 1024): Up to 1024 units of horizon clarity and light atmospheric fog.
• Dynamic Soft Shadows: Soft-edged, background-integrating contact shadows instead of the old hard black disc shadows.
• Blade Ribbon Trails: Fluid light trails that follow the movement of swords, daggers, and spears in close combat strikes.
• Area of Effect Ground Ring (AOE Targeting Decal): A 48-piece, pulsating, glowing targeting ring that adapts to the slope of the ground around the mouse cursor when selecting area spells such as Nova, Blizzard, etc.
• Custom Spell VFX: Multi-layered ground seals and explosion effects in level 45 and 60 mage novas.
2. Modern Combat & Sound Feedback (Combat Feedback & Immersion)
• Smart Tab/Z Targeting Filter (Smart Cone Targeting): Prioritizes live enemies in front of your camera, eliminates dead mobs, and smoothly switches between nearby targets with successive taps.
• Cast Progress Bar: A gold-framed, cyan-filled cast bar that displays the spell name and remaining seconds (e.g., Inferno 1.5s) while the spell is being cast.
• Floating Combat Text: Damage dealt, critical hits, and notifications float overhead.
• Shield Blocking/Shuttering Sound: A heavy metallic shield collision sound (SteelShield) on successful blocks (0 damage).
• Low-HP Vignette Warning: A pulsating red vignette appears around the edges of the screen when HP drops to a critical level.
3. User Interface & Quality of Life (Modern UI & QoL)
• Advanced Party Frames:
- Class abbreviations next to member names ([W] Warrior, [R] Rogue, [M] Mage, [P] Priest).
- A subtle, real-time blue MP bar below the HP bar.
- Automatic dimming for party members more than 45 meters away (out-of-range indicator).
• Skill Bar Countdown: Timers that show the remaining cooldowns on skill bars in seconds.
• Area and Real-Time Time Display:
Map name and current time information.
• In-Game Graphics Settings Window: Ability to instantly turn AA, Bloom, and view range on and off from within the game.
